AREA INFORMATION Thaxted Hall is ideally situated for touring East Anglia and the ancient town itself is steeped in history. This quintessentially English country town is over a thousand years old and pre-dates the Domesday Book. There is much to see and enjoy in the town, including the oft-sketched Cutlers Guildhall, the brightly distempered medieval houses that line the cobbled streets, John Webb’s carefully restored windmill with adjoining picnic area, the bustling market and the thatched almhouses. The town is also home to the cottage of the famous highwayman Dick Turpin and the house in Town Street where Gustav Holst composed part of his Planets suite. With its magnificent spire visible for miles, the parish church stands sentinel over all it surveys. Thaxted is a world-renowned centre for Morris Dancing and also hosts regular displays of jousting, battle re-enactments and medieval fayres. Many well-known musicians and choristers from the farthest flung corners of the Christian world appear regularly in the parish church, their performances enhanced by its near-perfect acoustics.
Beyond Thaxted itself, yet still within easy reach, there are many other attractions and places to visit, such as Audley End House in Saffron Walden, the picturesque village of Finchingfield, the beautiful historic university city of Cambridge and the Imperial War Museum at Duxford. Stately homes, art galleries, antiques centres, places of interest and the like abound in the surrounding area and, with Thaxted Hall as a comfortable and relaxing base, you can explore them all.
